Ejection-type high expansion foam generator ГПВК

High expansion foam generator is designed for fire extinguishing in closed areas of different designation:

  • Production sections and storehouses of petrochemical facilities and oil refineries.
  • Engine rooms, pumping stations and compressor plants, hangars including aircraft hangars, and light-cage enclosures.
  • Solvents and alcohol liquids storage areas.
  • Other warehouses designed for storage of valuable equipment, which rules out usage of large amounts of water for fire extinguishing.

The generator can be used both in stationary total flooding fire extinguishing systems and in a portable version — by fire brigades, in which case the generator provides efficient fire extinguishing in mines and basement areas, cable tunnels.

Expanding foam either effectively floods and extinguishes a local fire source inside a room or fills such room up to capacity (total flooding). In the latter case, besides saturation of surfaces with foam solution the foam also provides partitioning of the protected area thus restricting air draft into the spaces isolated with the foam and preventing flame propagation onwards from the flame emission source along the travel trajectories of combustion products, i.e. — ventilation ducts, cavities etc.

Advantages of application:

  • Air-ducts/openings in the walls of protected areas are not required whenever stationary installation of generators is designed, as foam formation process does not require fresh air (only with a special foam concentrate).
  • Various layouts of foam-generators’ arrangement are available within a stationary system.
  • Normally generators are used for total flooding a protected area, however they may also be used for localized fire extinguishing.
  • Foaming up is being accompanied by partitioning of the building space.
  • A relatively light weight of foam generators facilitates both installation works and usage by fire brigades.
  • There is a considerable cutback on the required water supply in comparison with sprinkler (drencher) water systems; the portable version provides multiply reduction of the damage caused by the water spilled by a fire brigade.
  • Whenever generators are used in stationary (automated) fire extinguishing system, the system provides protection of the whole space of the enclosure.

Extinguishing effect of the expansion foam is accounted for by a number of simultaneous processes:

  • During the direct contact between foam and a fire zone well known extinguishing mechanisms work: insulation of the fuel surface and the flame from an oxidizer (air), and cooling the fuel surface layer with foam solution;
  • Whenever there are smouldering substances the foam solution acts as a wetting agent preventing propagation of flame deep into the moldering material. The increase in the foam layer height prevents spreading of flame alongside vertical and inclined surfaces;
  • Whenever there are non-exposed flame sources inaccessible in terms of direct contact, the foam confines such sources within a three-dimensional space, i.e. partitioning of the protected space isolates the source from the rest of the air enabling its “self-extinguishing” and ruling out flame propagation.
